The lower falls are an easy walk, and the second set of falls are less than 3km from the parking lot but this is only a small part of the hike.

To reach the Ptarmigan Cirque trailhead, drive south down highway 40 about 70km until you see the marked Highwood Pass parking lot on the right. There is a short trail leading through a meadow from the parking lot, which leads to the trailhead. From here, carefully cross the highway and begin your journey up the trail.

The trail weaves through spruce forest and gains elevation quickly. It can be a little muddy with some exposed tree roots in this area, so watch your footing. Eventually, you will pass the treeline and will enter a meadow of wildflowers where the trail splits into the Ptarmigan Cirque trail loop. Follow the loop clockwise and you will cross a stream a few times before entering a bolder filled mountain bowl below the cliffs of Mount Arethusa.

The loop is short and circles the bowl. There are a few places to stop and admire the rugged mountain beauty, but when I hiked it was too windy to stop for a long lunch break. Try to find a slab or rock to sit on near the small pond to relax and enjoy the view. There is a small waterfall and often snow up top still. It’s a short and sweet hike back down to the parking lot, so take your time exploring.

Spend a few minutes admiring the falls (one of Canada’s highest waterfalls) before starting your hike. Walk towards the Whiskey Jack alpine hut and find the trailhead adjacent to the hostel. The hike will begin with a grueling set of switchbacks, where you gain most of your elevation from the start. It is a slow and painful slog with occasional views.

Keep right at all junctions to reach Iceline Summit, except the junction to Celeste Lake right before the summit, where you continue straight ahead to the pretty lake (at the 5.7 km mark). Once you reach the summit, the views are incredible, as are the looming glaciers touch the trail and mountain peaks fade away into the far distance. The terrain becomes quite rocky and varied with huge boulders and numerous glacier fed ponds.

Find a nice spot anywhere along the trail to stop and have lunch. When I was there, several people had built inuksuks along the top which added to the ambiance and provided a few nice photo ops. The views are incredible, and it was amazing to play in the snow in the middle of August!

We took one wrong turn and ended up hiking an extra 6km! Be prepared for all weather up here as well, it can change in an instant. Once at the top, a lightning storm rolled in and we had to make a rushed decent.

It's also possible to plan an overnight trip in the area. There is Little Yoho Campground or the Alpine Club’s Stanley Mitchell hut (reservations required). If you are looking for a little more luxury, the Emerald Lake lodge is also close and a great place to spend a night.

As always stay safe and happy hiking!

There is also an optional chair lift (Standish chair) can take you up the top of the Standish Viewpoint which overlooks the lakes and valley.

Head counter-clockwise around Rock Isle and follow the descending path until you reach an intersection. I suggest heading right towards Grizzly Lake (3.6km) first. The lake is gorgeous, but there aren’t a lot of rest spots here, so keep going to the Simpson Viewpoint (4.25km). Here the entire valley opens up and the mountains continue on into the far distance. It's one of the most spectacular mountain vistas I have ever seen. Take a break, have lunch here and admire the breathtaking view.

After taking a break at the viewpoint, continue on to reach Larix Lake (4.45km). The path curves around the lake and there are several great spots to stop and enjoy the view. Every direction you look, there are snow-capped mountains with the pretty turquoise lake in front. Eventually, the path will lead you back to Rock Isle Lake. Make a pit stop in the day lodge for a beverage or washroom break, then head back down to the parking lot.

This hike is one of my favourites and a great option for out of town guests who may not come prepared for a more rugged hike. It’s also one of the best areas for photography, as the views are incredible and the whole valley goes yellow in larch season. Definitely a must-do.

The trail is less than 100 meters down the trail but isn’t marked, look for the worn trail heading to the right, following a path up the mountain. At the time of my visit, there was a small fence with a bear warning at the start of the trail. Hike in a group and take responsible bear precautions, and you should be fine.

Follow the trail through forest and then ascend the ridge that runs up the mountain. Be very careful of your footing along the ridge so you don't fall, it gets steep at points. The trail climbs quickly and once you pass the tree line, the view over Upper and Lower Kananaskis Lakes is incredible. You can stop hiking and return at any point, without missing much. If you are a strong hiker, however, you can continue up the ridge until the trail divides Go left to make the summit, or take a right and the trail will continue more level to a small pond around the bend.

I may have been a little out of shape when I did this hike because I couldn’t make it to the summit. After the steady upward climb I was out of breath and instead opted for lunch next to the pond. The views are stunning no matter where you look so it didn’t feel like a loss to miss the summit. The wildflowers were blooming and the pond was beautifully situated in a pocket on the other side of a wildflower-filled meadow. Definitely one of the hardest hikes I have done, but the views aren’t to be missed. Make sure to check trail reports and take bear spray on this one.

The trail starts from the Moraine Lake parking lot and follows the lakeshore trail around the right side of the lake where there the trail is well marked with two intersections. Keep right at both to head up into the forest via a series of switchbacks.

After a steady 360 meter climb, you will arrive in Larch Valley. In the spring and summer the meadow is filled with wildflowers, and in the autumn it is filled with saffron colorful larch trees. It is spectacular any time of the season, but especially in the autumn. There are epic mountains views of the 'ten peaks', which is the iconic mountain range whose image used to appear on the old Canadian $20 bill.

Keep going another 2.5 kilometers with another few hundred meters of elevation to Sentinal Pass. In this pass, you will be surrounded by stunning Eiffel Peak and Pinnacle Mountain to the left and Mount Temple to your right. There is also a small pond which makes a nice place to take a break before the last sprint up to the top of Sentinal Pass.

This part of the trail looks steeper from the bottom than it really is, it's not a scramble but a very exposed section of shale switchbacks. It doesn’t take long to reach the top though, and it is completely worth it for the epic views from the top. You get a panoramic view of the ten peaks one direction, and Paradise Valley the other.

Find a flat rock and have lunch here and take your time to enjoy the epic view. It's one of the most dramatic mountains scenes you will experience. On a clear day, it's surreal. Autumn is even more spectacular with an array of color from the laches.

The towering Mount Babel and reflections over the lake are stunning, as is the Glacier situated hanging from Mount Quadra.

Find a large flat rock and enjoy lunch here, sometimes little chipmunks will come up and try to con food out of you. When you are ready to leave, just head back the way you came.

Just keep in mind that Moraine Lake is one of Banff’s busiest areas, so expect crowds on weekends, and also note that hikes in this area often have a minimum number of about 5 people, as grizzly bears frequent the area. Check trail reports before heading out.

The trail is a bit monotonous …

The hike begins at the Galatea/Lilian Lake trailhead, on the right-hand side of Highway 40 shortly after the golf course. Starting with a suspension bridge over the Kananaskis River, the trail repeatedly zig-zags over Galatea Creek, via nine small wooden bridges.

The trail climbs gently for several kilometres towards Lilian lake, which is a great spot for lunch. There is also a scenic backcountry campground here for those wanting to make this an overnight trip.

Beginners will like the grand, top-of-the-world view without having to go deep or far into the mountains to get it.

The trailhead begins behind on the edge of Waterton town, behind the Visitor Information Centre. Follow the path up the network of switchbacks and wooden stairs. The trail is only moderately exposed, and mostly rocky without a lot of tree or foliage cover.

Eventually, you will reach the ‘hump’, a flat rocky area overlooking the town. From here there are incredible views over the Waterton Valley and Lakes. This is one of Waterton’s claims to fame, as well as being the world's first International Peace Park.

If you are looking for a short, early …

To get to the trailhead, drive through Canmore past the Nordic Centre and up the gravel Smith-Dorrien Trail. Drive 5km until arriving at the Goat Creek Day Use Area, and look for the trail across the road. Head up the gravel service road and cross the bridge over the stream, the trail is marked by the boulder with a small plaque.

The trail will begin in the forest, and then switch back repeatedly, gaining steady elevation. There are a few quick glances at mountain views, throughout the forest and the coverage is nice while it lasts. There are lots of exposed roots and rock, so watch your step.

Eventually, you will pass the tree-line into a fully exposed area of spree that continues up the backside of the mountain, with fantastic views down the valley. The higher you climb, the better the views will get. Watch your footing on the loose rock, but there is no need to scramble here. Make sure you pack sunscreen because it will be 100% exposure from here till the top.

Follow the path all the way to the peak for an amazing panoramic view. Just be very careful at the top, so you don’t fall down the 600-meter drop off the mountain. Also be cautious not to knock rocks over the edge, as rock climbers frequently climb the front of the cliff. Have lunch here and enjoy the views. If it's a clear day, it's incredible how far you can see, and if you are lucky, you may also see mountain goats grazing in the alpine meadows. The return is the same way back down, but much faster to descend.

The lower falls are an easy walk, and the second set of falls are less than 3km from the parking lot but this is only a small part of the hike. For …

For those who continue past the strollers and families, the path continues another 3km up to the Ink Pots, a series of small green and blue ponds in the Johnston Valley. The Ink Pots themselves aren’t the highlight, but the beautiful, sunny valley is worth the hike.

To get to the trailhead, head west from Banff on the Bow Valley Parkway (Highway 1A) and look for the clearly marked Johnston Canyon parking lot on the right-hand side. There are washrooms, an ice-cream shop, and cabins here, as well as a lot of people.

This is one of the most popular hikes in Banff (at all times of the year), so expect the lower portion of the hike to be busy, even on weekdays. Most visitors, however, are only here to see the waterfalls, so it won't be long until the crowd thins out.

The path starts as a series of catwalks bolted to the canyon walls and following the river, past several small waterfalls, and two major ones. The Lower Falls are one 1.1km down the path and are 10m high. They can be viewed from above or through a natural tunnel, which is a great way to experience them up close and feel the spray.

Keep going another to 2.7km to the Upper Falls which are an impressive 30m in height, and the crowd will die out almost completely. The pavement will stop and the forest will become denser, this is where the real hike begins.

After about 3km the trail will open into the stunning Johnston Valley, with fantastic mountain views surrounding the tiny turquoise blue, spring water filled Ink Pots.

Although the Ink Pots aren't mind-blowing, they are quite pretty, and it's nice to have lunch beside the pools on the provided benches. Then take a little time to explore the beautiful valley before heading back the same way.

This is also a neat area to check out in the winter when the waterfalls in the canyon are frozen. Make sure to bring cramp-on though, as the paved path gets treacherous when covered in ice.
