A day trip from Ho Chi Min city took us to thick jungle and the Cu Chi tunnels, home of the Viet Cong base during the Vietnam war. The tunnels themselves are an intricate network of tiny underground passageways covering over 250km, and an integral part of winning the war.
After watching an informational video, trying to fit into the tiny tunnels and learning about war tactics, we were able to pay for a few rounds on one of the many guns available on display. I have always been curious about shooting a gun. Having never grown up around them, I have always considered them with extreme caution, but this seemed like a once-in-a-lifetime chance. I picked an AK47, through there were also machine guns and rifles as well.
The shooting arcade is lined up along one section of the jungle with a variety of guns strapped to a wooden barrier and pointed toward some targets about 25′ away. Some sound dampening ear phones, and some aviators (for dramatic effect), prepared me to pull the trigger for the first time.
Bang! It was an immediate adrenaline rush and the next 9 rounds went quickly. Because the guns are mounted, you don’t have to worry about a hard kickback but can still feel the power of the blast. It was good fun, although I don’t think I’ll be rushing to do it again anytime soon. The jungle setting, aviators and AK47 can’t really be topped.
